My own sports "career"
Although I was never really successful, sport was always playing a great part in my life.
I started athletics at the age of 8 (I think…) and I stayed with it for about 10 years,
when other things turned out to be more important.
Myself I never did a heptathlon, my disciplines have always been the short distances, 100m and 200m,
looking back I regret that a little.
After my athletics time I played football for a year or so, until I had to quit sports
because of problems with my knee.
Now I'm trying to keep fit with inline-skating, biking and whatever else comes into my mind.
How I got to decathlon?
Mainly because of my parents. As far as I know they always used to be interested in athletics
in general and decathlon in particular. They even saw legends like Daley Thompson or
Jürgen Hingsen live during the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984.
My first encounter with world-class decathlon was probably at the age of 8,
when we visited the World Championships in Stuttgart, of course only few memories are left
from that time, but my fascination for athletics started then.
The next year our annual visits to the Mecca of Decathlon started,
Dani, who joined us in 2000, and I will hopefully continue that tradition.
Together with my family I also visited big events like the EC in Munich 2002
or the WC one year later in Paris. And of course we are also planning to see the WC this year
in Berlin But still Götzis is every year's highlight
for me concerning decathlon, nowhere else you are that close to the athletes.
