Though you might not think it's very difficult to run 3 ¾ laps in a stadium - this is maybe the most feared and respected discipline of all in a decathlon.

After two days with 9 disciplines the decathletes are already tired and exhausted and this middle distance track event proves a large challenge for every athlete, testing their endurance and also their will to finish their competition.
It does not award many points (33 points for 5 s), but being the last discipline it can make the difference in the fight for medals or good scores. Knowing the point differences to their opponents there are often direct duels between two athletes for a better position.
Good runners like Arthur Abele can run below 4:20 minutes (up to 850 points), but in my opinion everyone who masters this event after two days should be considered a great athlete :)
Some of the best decathletes in this event with their PBs:
- Frédéric Xhonneux (BEL) - 4:13.05
- Nicklas Wiberg (SWE) - 4:14.38
- Arthur Abele (GER) - 4:15.35
- Leonel Suárez (CUB) - 4:16.70
- Michael Schrader (GER) - 4:19.32
To compare the current world record for this event is 3:26.00, held by Hicham El Guerrouj.
